In season three, Darlene deployed a new revenge tactic. “She had to make some kind of really strong statement to try to intimate that the cartel had done that.” Killing people that she really had no gripe against,” says Emery, before rationalizing the fatal dosages in Darlene’s head. In season two, Darlene mixed fentanyl into the cartel’s heroin as revenge for burning down her poppy field. “It’s hard for me as a human being to justify that, but I can see why Darlene would do it,” says Emery, recalling how Darlene was told the baby would die if left inside her mother’s dead body. Season one ended with what Emery considers to be Darlene’s darkest plot point on Ozark-killing the pregnant wife of a pastor, in retaliation for him hurting her heroin business, and cutting out her unborn child (whom Darlene would eventually adopt and call Zeke). But Emery, the actor who played Darlene, was not surprised to see her reckless character at the end of someone else’s shotgun. The double murder sends Ruth ( Julia Garner) reeling in the show’s final cliffhanger seconds, and shocked viewers when the first half of season four premiered over the weekend. So, only eight minutes after Darlene and Wyatt’s wedding, Mexican cartel rep Javi ( Alfonso Herrera) arrives at Darlene’s home and shoots her and her groom dead. The Mexican drug cartel has moved into her territory, and Darlene-proud, stubborn businesswoman that she is-has refused to stop supplying heroin. It is a rare moment of happiness for the character, who has killed with the unpredictability and ease of a comic book villain during the show’s four-year span.
